I completely agree with other reviewers, that this book is a must have for every weaver, BUT ...I was looking for the revised edition of this book. Amazon listing for revised edition offered 2 options: hardcover and paperback. As I clicked paperback it changed the edition without any warning and I ended up ordering the 2014 reprint (the one with red cover) of A Handweaver's Pattern Book, its original edition. That is a totally different book. For comparison, 2014 reprint, or this (red) book only has 142 pages as opposed to 217 pages in the revised (green) version; entire chapters are missing in the red book and those chapters that match the ones in the green book, list fewer patterns. I didn't have time to count the total number of patterns in both editions, just by my estimate: red book has less then half of the patterns included in the green book. Even the format of the red book is very unpleasant: the figures, and drafts are much smaller than in the green edition, often times too uncomfortable to read.Quite confusingly, Amazon decided to put both these books into the same listing, but they are entirely different books. I notified them of the fact, but they merely added the picture of 2014 paperback edition while still not changing the listing.SUMMARY: If you are looking to purchase this handweaver's classic, stay clear of red cover 2014 edition and make sure you are ordering a revised edition, published in 1950 (the one with green cover).
Ordered this book because a friend has it and loves it. But hers is the original - has yellow cover. Did not realize this orange copy is not the same book - does not have the same pictures of examples of the patterns - mine has fewer, are very fuzzy and are much smaller - and mine does not have all the patterns that hers does. It does not have the pattern I saw in her book that was the reason I was buying this book. Very disappointed - would never have ordered this book if I had known it is not the complete original.
I love the older versions of this book, but this version shrunk the diagrams so much and the printed was so poor that your couldn't read the patterns.
I have no idea how this book has come into existence. It is an item that partakes of false advertising. It is a portion of the highly useful original book, but its title has not been changed. Thus, people who order this book might think—as I did—that they were getting the same book that has been sold to America's weavers for decades. Such is not the case. I believe that newer weavers might not even know that this book is NOT the original and that many pages and drafts are missing—including some of the most famous. The way this book is being sold is dishonest and something needs to be done about it either by the publishers or by this vendor (Amazon). The case is simple: this is a subset of the original book but it is not labeled as such. Until it is so labeled, I strongly urge all prospective buyers to refrain from purchasing it and to express your displeasure with the original publishers.Respectfully,David Xenakis
The older "GREEN BOOK" has more designs and is more easily read. Save yourself a few bucks and get the older one.
I bought a used 4 harness floor loom a couple of months ago. The seller told me if I only ever bought two books to buy this one and Learning to Weave by Deborah Chandler. I am so happy that she did. This book is just full of designs. There is an explanation of the drafts (patterns), a yarn comparison chart and a page or two of text as the book changes types of patterns (ex: twill to bird's eye), but other than that it is 202 pages of patterns with at least 6 patterns per page, and most pages have many more than that. The book is dedicated solely to 4 Harness patterns.I was so frustrated looking for patterns and finding single patterns, or just 6 in a book. This book is a must for anyone weaving on a 4 harness loom. This book and Learning to Weave are the only two books I will need for a long time to come.
I found out after receiving this and looking for a specific draft that this edition isn't the complete one. There is another edition with a green cover that is more complete and is actually the one I wanted. I have returned this. There isn't anything wrong with this edition other than not being as complete.
For those who have never used it I would highly recommend this pattern book, especially if you are a visual learner. Every written pattern is recorded not with words, but in a visual setup similar to notes on a music sheet. Every and every pattern includes the hettle and peddle pattern to use, and is paired with a black and white sample of it woven correctly.Once you have passed the learning curve of translating the pattern to the actual components of the loom, everything is fairly simple. The book is organized so that the simplest of the simple patterns are at the very front and then get harder from there. Everything in the back of the book is for more experience weavers or those looking for a challenge. The selection of patterns in this book to choose from, no matter your experience level, is vast. I could weave for years and never use all the patterns this one book. NOTE: All patterns in this book are for 4 harness looms. Also, this is a pattern book, not a teaching/how-to book. It expects you to ALREADY KNOW how to properly set up a loom. (Find the ends per inch, slay the reed, thread the hettles, adjust tension, etc.) If you are looking for a book that will teach you from scratch how to weave then bookmark this for later and keep looking.
