As a Central American immigrant, this book absolutely resonates with me. It is amazing to see how much valuable information and anecdotes Jane shares with us.It’s clear that in third world countries, there are lots of talented and hard working men and women who have limited resources that need our help and support.I enjoyed learning about different options and purchasing power we have as consumers and ways to empower artisans .At the same time, as small business owner, this book makes me rethink the sourcing of my company ‘s products . I have learned that there are more ethical ways to operate and to grow.
I interviewed Jane when she first launched her site and loved reading her back story on To The Market. Her dedication to designing and marketing products for the U.S. consumer while providing honest work for marginalized populations is beyond admirable. She is changing lives and preserving cultural heritage through her work. By sharing her story and the stories of her artisans I think she can help change consumer behavior. This was such a good book, so informative and really made me review my buying choices. I love the author’s focus on how something as simple as the coffee you drink can make another person’s life better - and her anecdotes are both unusual and thoughtful. You will finish this book feeling so empowered! And looking at the world around you through a fresh lens. I am definitely buying this for some of my socially conscious friends - this is an amazing way of making change easily, and truly an inspiring read.
I've been recently trying to be better about being conscious of what I buy but I was mostly focused around food products when a friend informed me about this book. It is exactly what I love in a book; it's a great quick read, incredibly informative, and really made me think about my choices! We as a society no longer want the cheapest products without considering the ethical and environmental costs. This book is at the forefront of this change.

Jane starts by telling the story how she founded her company, To the Market with that fateful trip to India where she saw firsthand how consumers can use their purchases to impact social change. That trip was the beginning of Jane's journey to founding To the Market, a business that connects consumers and businesses to survivor made goods from all around the world. Jane shows how our purchases of these products not only is a lovely gift for others but also gives back by providing sustainable income, a future and hope to these artisans. Our purchase has a ripple effect of not only helping the artisan with an income, but by impacting entire communities through an increase in education, health, environment and more. Jane also sheds light on the coffee and chocolate industries with ways in which ethical sourcing has improved lives and how our purchases again help small farmers and the planet. This book blew me away and got me so excited to learn and do more.
Jane does an incredible job of bringing the reader along her own personal journey. You will find her describing a detailed scene where she learns how hard it is to sew denim, and a more stark reality about who is sewing denim on the clothes we wear. Her experiences become your experiences and her perspective will become your perspective. I not only enjoy reading these passages for myself, but also immediately obtained a copy for my 15-year old daughter. Her generation needs to be educated on this today as they can truly bring the change we want to see.
Really love Jane's story and the practicality of her message. It can feel so difficult to make a dent with problems that tough our hearts - but every person has the power to make impact with very simple daily decisions. I'll be sharing this book with friends! :)
