His scandal
Her secret
From New York Times best-selling author Alafair Burke, a stunning domestic thriller in the vein of Behind Closed Doors and The Woman in Cabin 10 - in which a woman must make the impossible choice between defending her husband and saving herself.
When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. For Angela, the marriage turned out to be a chance to reboot her life. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother's home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past.
Six years later, thanks to a best-selling book and a growing media career, Jason has become a cultural lightning rod, placing Angela near the spotlight she worked so carefully to avoid. When a college intern makes an accusation against Jason, and another woman, Kerry Lynch, comes forward with an even more troubling allegation, their perfect life begins to unravel. Jason insists he is innocent, and Angela believes him. But when Kerry disappears, Angela is forced to take a closer look at the man she married. And when she is asked to defend Jason in court, she realizes that her loyalty to her husband could unearth old secrets.
This much-anticipated follow-up to Burke's Edgar-nominated The Ex asks how far a wife will go to protect the man she loves: Will she stand by his side, even if he drags her down with him?

If Alafair Burke's the author, you just know it's going to be good!. This story is so well written, you feel you are right there experiencing sympathy for Angela and her son after her husband's been sleeping around, and arrested for rape. But as the story evolves, you are wondering if all the characters have hidden agendas and just who is telling the truth. This story is emotionally charged, you can't stop turning the pages. And then there's the ending that you didn't see coming, but actually makes sense. Alot of secrets, lies, revenge, affairs, false accusations and murder. What more could you ask for. Makes you think, makes you realize not everything is what it seems.Great job and am looking forward to your next book!Downloaded this book today and finished it today--it's just that good.
A very timely story - #metoo - that I read it in one sitting. But it didn't WOW me. It's my first time reading this author and she writes very well, her characters are well rounded and story was engaging. I'm giving it only three stars because I don't think this is a book I'll remember in a couple of years simply because the format is similar to so many other screwed-up-marriage mysteries out there. I didn't love Gone Girl, and it seems like almost every psychological thriller I've read in the past two years has a dysfunctional marriage/relationship with twisted behaviors of the man and woman and a big twist at the end. (I have no one to blame for this except myself because I'm choosing these books, so I guess this is a wake-up call to stop buying them.) I would recommend this book to anyone one a beach, plane, metro, or bus. And wait for the paperback.
I'm keep this short to avoid spoilers. This book has fascinating characters. It would be a good book for a book group. There is a lot that can be discussed. It will keep you up late reading and has some completely unexpected twists that you could never even guess at. If you like suspense and mystery, give it a try. You won't be sorry.
Long, drawn out and an abrupt, seemingly unfinished ending. I was not a fan or advocate of any of the characters, and this always constitutes a rough read for me.
Wow! I'd sworn off domestic thrillers, Gone Girl knockoffs and the like last year, but The Wife was a happy surprise. After downloading the sample on Kindle, I went for the whole book. The plot is relevant to our present "me too" culture, and it moves along, peeling the layers off the characters and events at a steady pace. My only bumps were descriptions and info dumps about someone's water-treatment business, but otherwise, it was a real page-turner. I couldn't decide if the main narrator, Angela, was unreliable, but mum's the word on that. I found her and the other characters believable with the right amount of flaws.Warning: you may neglect your laundry and other tasks once you start this book.
The book that I stayed up into the night reading and woke up first thing in the morning to finish it because I was in total suspense. This is Alafair Burke’s novel THE WIFE.Without revealing too much. Nice girl with a young son – meet cute nice guy with career about to skyrocket. This is her moment to move on. Just as his career is sky-high… Let’s just say the subject is current, you might change who you’re rooting for from chapter to chapter, and it is full of plenty of creepiness and intrigue to hold your attention. It’s no wonder this book was so gripping, the author is a former prosecutor, Stanford Law School graduate, and now a professor of Law. Talk about quality credentials. Excuse me as I am off to read her previous book, THE EX.
This book reminded me of a hot, flaky, layered biscuit. You take that first bite and it makes you want another. You keep peeling off those layers and enjoying every little bit and then you get to the end and just want to savor it. There is that last yummy taste and then you can’t wait for another one. I hope Alafair Burke is working on that next delicious book/biscuit.Angela Powell has escaped a dark past and is living with her husband Jason in New York. Everything is looking up for them. Her son Spencer is (from her past) is doing well. Her husband is a professor who is on the fast track to fame and fortune until a woman accuses him of sexual harassment. Things seem to be going okay with that case until another woman accuses him of rape. Angela struggles with what it all means and then the woman disappears. This leads to so many different layers in the book that I won’t begin to even go into except to say, wow. Finding out about Angela’s past as it slowly comes out is the butter on the biscuit. Things are not always what they seem. And the ending…..You won’t want to put this down until you know exactly what has happened in everything, past and present. I will now sit patiently until the next book.
I really wanted to read this before seeing the movie, that's why I bought it. Now hoping the movie ends differently or in such a way that you don't feel like someone tore the last pages out of the book. I was like, "Wait...what? Huh? Crap." Otherwise, slightly better than average published writing with some decent twists. Author made a not so bright choice to somewhat compare Donald Trump to a rapist, or at least that is how it appeared. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a horrible POTUS but to my knowledge he isn't a rapist. I'm a Democrat and was turned off by that silliness. So if you don't care for writers who just toss in their "political" views where it isn't even applicable, not the writer for you.
